Hayes' Say

The Treuer Memorial was run on Saturday night and while it turned out to be dominated by the two horses that led and death seated, it wasn't the two horses I expected to be at the head of affairs. Washakie was outstanding in victory and after his recent efforts deserved a major race win. Obviously Karloo Mick looked a standout before the race but it was the confidence from Natalie Rasmussen about Western Cam that had a lot of people thinking he would be the other main chance. Nat believed she would lead but couldn't and after the field had gone 100 metres the race was thrown into chaos.

Emmas Only showed blinding speed to lead before handing over to Saucy Legend and it was Blake Fitzpatrick's aggressive attempt to hold the lead that put a dent in the chances of Karloo Mick as he was forced to be driven extremely hard to find the top. As I did last week after the Miracle Mile, here are my ratings on each horse's effort in the Bankstown feature.

Washakie – 10/10 You don't get a much tougher win than that. He outstayed Karloo Mick and the Queenslander is better known for his speed than his grit. Had Western Cam sit on his back for two laps and gave his rivals every chance to beat him. Now heads to Melbourne for the Victoria Cup and will need to improve again to be a major player. Just goes to show how unlucky he was in the Bohemia Crystal Free For All on Miracle Mile day when he got knocked for six.

Karloo Mick – 7/10 On reflection it is fair to say that the nine year old was disappointing after his third in the Miracle Mile but it is important to consider a few factors. The horse was backing up only six days after his career best effort and he has been in a few wars over the past three weeks and maybe it is all catching up with him. Was still in for the fight on the turn but couldn't hold off Washakie. The early burn took its toll.

Atomic Ark – 8/10 The second stringer from the Rasmussen stable did a great job to come from so far back in the field. Was quick to jump on the back of Our Brahman Boy as they turned out of the straight for the final time and that was a decisive move by Darren Hancock. Didn't lose much on the winners in the final 400 metres and was very deep off the track. His run the week before in the Bohemia Crystal Free For All was good and he was over the odds.

Western Cam – 5/10 Got crossed at the start and that was the first fly in the ointment for Rasmussen. Was able to obtain the run of the race when Washakie moved to the death and as a result was entitled to do more in the run to the finish. Natalie says it is her replacement for Blacks A Fake and I have no doubt that in time he will be able to mix it with the big boys, he might need a bit more hard racing at the very top level. Looks to lack real high speed in his two Sydney runs.

Cant Bluff Me – 7/10 Got back into some old habits when he broke on the first turn and while he got down quickly, it is still a problem the Ian Wilson stable are continuing to address. Got shuffled back to last in the back straight the final time and while Jim Douglass was able to get around Emmas Only he ran into traffic jams behind Saucy Legend and Western Cam. Big run under the circumstances.

Our Brahman Boy – 6/10 Never considered a winning chance and did all the bullocking work out three wide for the last lap. Ran into third place as they turned for home but understandably got tired up the straight. The best that could be expected from this horse in this grade.

Saucy Legend – 4/10 The Fitzpatrick camp were obviously confident going into the race and Blake wasn't keen to hand over the lead to Karloo Mick. Was gone at the quarter and only got in people's way up the straight. In saying that, this horse has come a very long way in a very short time and will be better for the experience. Has good tactical speed and is a real chance of qualifying for the Inter Dominion final next year.

Live To Laugh – 4/10 Use to fly out of the gates when trained by the Fitzpatrick stable and looks to have lost a bit of his early speed now however he still put in a very honest performance on Saturday night. Was driven conservatively and finished twenty five metres behind the winner. Was out of his depth.

Comet Prince – 3/10 Was his first real crack at the top grade and the barrier draw put an end to any chance that he had in the race. Pulled out three wide onto the back of Atomic Ark but was unable to go with him and finished twenty six metres behind Washakie. The event looked beyond him but you can't bag the connections for wanting a crack at the race.

Emmas Only – 1/10 Led the charge to the winning post the first time and that was his claim to fame. Handed the lead over straight away to Saucy Legend but unfortunately was a beaten conveyance at the 600 metre mark. On his gate speed alone will be competitive in country cup races but his group one days are well and truly in the past.

The Victoria Cup is the feature race this week and it looks set to be an absolute cracker with most of the Miracle Mile combatants set to go around again. Fireworks would be assured if Melpark Major and Smoken Up draw the front line. There is a bit of ill feeling between the two camps as was evidenced by a confrontation between Alan Tubbs and Lance Justice at Geelong on Saturday night. Bring it on! Catch you next week.
